Mark Marderwald and James Heller were on duty on July 22nd 1999. Manning the lieutenant station as ocean lifeguards on Olive Street, Rehoboth Beach Delaware, Mark and James were moved by the cremation ash scattering for John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. Together, as Mark and James looked out over the beautiful Atlantic, they pondered the special celebration of John and Carolyn's life.
That day, Ceremonies At Sea was born. Mark and James thought there would be no better way to bring people together and honor life's biggest moments, than with the picturesque tranquility of the sea as a backdrop. Furthermore, Mark and James decided that they would use Ceremonies At Sea to promote charitable causes, in an environmentally conscious way, while providing free ceremonies -- where possible -- to ocean lifeguards, public servants and charitable individuals.
"It is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean and therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea we are going back from whence we came." ~~ John F. Kennedy
